Why January to March?
Sri Lanka has two monsoons, each affecting a different side of the island. In the first months of the year the Cultural Triangle, the highlands and the south coast around Galle are at their driest. The Maldives also see the least rain then, with calm seas and plenty of sun. So both parts of the trip are in their best season at the same time.
Outside those months the trip is possible too, after a chat. Expect a higher chance of showers then, especially in summer, when the monsoon reaches the southwest and the Maldives.
The route in brief
Sri Lanka (ten days with your own driver). You're picked up in Colombo and drive to the Cultural Triangle. There you climb Sigiriya's Lion Rock, visit the cave temples of Dambulla and the royal city of Polonnaruwa, and go by jeep among the elephants of Minneriya. Near Sigiriya a candlelit dinner by the lake awaits.
Then comes the Temple of the Tooth and the train through the tea hills, with a night in an old tea planter's bungalow, full board. You end on the south coast, in the old fort town of Galle at sunset.
The Maldives (five nights). A flight from Colombo to Malé and a seaplane take you to a villa above the lagoon. Breakfast and dinner are included. A sunset cruise and a couples' massage complete it.

Included: all 14 nights, arranged in advance; breakfast and dinner near Sigiriya and in the Maldives, full board on the tea estate; your own driver and car for ten days; the train ride through the highlands; the Colombo–Malé flight and the seaplane; entrance to Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa and the Temple of the Tooth; the jeep safari; the romantic moments; and my number, always at hand, before and during the trip.
Not included: the international flight, the ETA (electronic visa) for Sri Lanka, tips, your own travel insurance and drinks not included in the stay.
Where does most of the budget go?
To the Maldives. A villa above the water with a seaplane transfer costs more per night than the stays in Sri Lanka. To lower the budget, one night less in the Maldives or one more in Sri Lanka can help. If you want more rest instead, we add beach nights.

Do we need a visa?
For Sri Lanka most travellers apply online for an ETA in advance. In the Maldives most nationalities receive a visa on arrival. Check the travel advice of your own country too.
Can we stay longer in the Maldives?
Yes. Every route is a starting point. We add nights or leave something out in Sri Lanka.
Is the trip demanding?
No. Lion Rock means some stairs; the rest is relaxed. Your own driver does all the driving.
Is December good too?
December falls just outside the months we recommend. January to March is the safest bet.
