Tailor-made Nicaragua trip: a private 15-day route of volcanoes, colonial cities and the Corn Islands

A private, tailor-made Nicaragua trip from Belgium with private drivers: León, Ometepe, Granada and Big Corn Island. Route, prices and travel advice.

Scheduled · 10 October 2026

This tailor-made Nicaragua trip takes you from the Pacific side of the country to the Caribbean Sea in two weeks. You walk on the white roof of León cathedral, slide down a black volcano, spend three nights on the volcanic island of Ometepe, watch the lava glow in Masaya's crater at dusk and finish on Big Corn Island.

It is my recommended route, with the stops and hotels I selected. It is a private trip: you travel with your partner, family or friends on the dates you choose, with no group and no tour escort. Airport pickup, hotels, private drivers, the ferry and the domestic flight are arranged in advance.

First, the political climate

The Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs (updated 30 September 2026) says travel to Nicaragua is safe as long as the usual precautions are taken. There is no negative travel advice. It also describes the social and political situation as very tense. Stay away from all gatherings. Foreigners may not take part in political life, on pain of arrest or deportation, and the government can refuse entry without explanation. Belgium has no embassy or honorary consulate in Nicaragua; the embassy in Panama City is responsible.

For the Caribbean coast, including Corn Island and Little Corn Island, the FPS asks for extra caution. It advises against the town of Bluefields, where you do not stay. If you would rather skip the Caribbean coast, we replace those days with the crater lake Laguna de Apoyo and the Pacific coast.

Whether to travel to Nicaragua today is a personal choice. I use family-run hotels, local drivers and local skippers so your money reaches ordinary Nicaraguans, and I re-check the advice before every trip.

Best time to travel

On the Pacific side (León, Ometepe, Granada) the dry season runs from December to April. The Corn Islands have a Caribbean climate with showers all year; they are driest from February to April, which is also when underwater visibility is best. June to August is very wet there, and hurricane season runs from June to November. Late January to April suits both sides. I went in July myself: green and quiet, but expect rain on the islands.

The route and why it runs this way

You land in Managua, usually late in the evening, and sleep five minutes from the airport. Next morning you briefly see the Plaza de la Revolución before a two-hour drive to León (2 nights): the cathedral roof, the colonial quarter and volcano boarding on Cerro Negro, with the Flor de Caña rum distillery as an alternative.

A four-hour drive and a one-hour ferry bring you to Ometepe (3 nights), where you stay at a lodge at the foot of Maderas volcano. You hike to San Ramón waterfall, kayak the Río Istián and spend a day with your driver at El Ceibo, Charco Verde, Punta Jesús María and the Ojo de Agua spring.

Granada (3 nights) follows: a city walk, a boat trip among Las Isletas, the Catarina viewpoint, Masaya market and the volcano at dusk, plus a full day in the cloud forest of Mombacho.

From Managua you fly 80 minutes to Big Corn Island (4 nights): snorkelling on the reefs, a walk up to the lookout tower on Mount Pleasant with an afternoon on Picnic Center beach, and a day by bike. After the flight back you spend one more night in Managua. That night is a deliberate buffer in case weather delays the small plane.

Private driver instead of self-drive

We do not offer self-drive in Nicaragua. Main roads are good, but police checkpoints are frequent, and after an accident you may not move the car until the police arrive, which leaves a foreigner in a weak position in a country without a Belgian embassy. You also need no car on Ometepe or the Corn Islands, and a private driver costs hardly more than a rental car with full insurance. So you get a trusted driver on the mainland and a local driver on Ometepe, who drive in daylight only.

We also handle the mandatory pre-registration with Nicaraguan immigration, the ferry and flight tickets, and luggage storage in Managua while you are on the island. At Comfort level you stay in the hotels I selected, or similar: Totoco Eco Lodge on Ometepe, Hotel Jardín Garden de Granada and Paraíso Beach Hotel on Big Corn. On Ometepe and the Corn Islands comfort stays simple at every level.

Practical tips

  • Visa (Belgian passport): no visa required; passport valid for 6 months; USD 10 tourist card in cash on arrival.
  • Health: no mandatory vaccinations when arriving from Belgium. Protect yourself against mosquitoes. Medical care is limited, especially on the Corn Islands, so travel insurance with repatriation is essential. See wanda.be.
  • Money: córdoba and US dollars. Bring small dollar notes and withdraw cash before the islands.
  • Guides: only the El Puma trail on Mombacho requires a certified guide (included). Prefer a guide? I can add a local guide to any activity.
  • Meals: Breakfast is included every day. For the other meals you get my restaurant recommendations, but you are completely free to choose where and when you eat: I never steer you to expensive restaurants in return for a commission.
  • Luggage: the small plane to Big Corn has a limit of about 13.6 kg. Your suitcase stays in Managua.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Nicaragua?

No, but advance online registration is mandatory. We handle it for you.

Is the Masaya lava always visible?

No. It depends on volcanic activity, and the park can close at short notice.

Is volcano boarding risky?

You wear overalls, gloves and goggles and control your own speed. Grazes do happen. Check that your insurance covers it; you can also walk down.

Can I travel solo or change the route?

Yes to both. Solo travellers pay about 68% more because the room and transport are not shared; four travelling together pay about 14% less per person. You can change the number of days, the order, the hotels and the activities.

Plan your trip

There are no fixed departures: you leave whenever you like. It starts with a personal intake meeting, at your home or by video. You then receive a tailor-made proposal, with my recommended route as the starting point. Plan a call via the interest list or email info@steennot-travels.be. Before we start selling trips, we take out the legally required insurance against financial insolvency. Prices remain estimates until then.
