South Africa & Eswatini private tour: 18 days with Kruger

A tailor-made South Africa & Eswatini private tour: 18 days, self-drive or private driver. Eswatini, Zululand, the Panorama Route and 4 days in Kruger.

This South Africa & Eswatini private tour is the route I drove myself, from Johannesburg and back. In 18 days you enter the kingdom of Eswatini for Mlilwane, on horseback among the zebras, and head down to Kosi Bay to snorkel in the river mouth. Via the rhinos of Hluhluwe-iMfolozi you reach St Lucia, with hippos in the lagoon and dolphins at sea. Back in Eswatini you walk in Hlane, at the Nsangwini rock art and along the Phophonyane falls. Then the Panorama Route at Graskop and four days of game viewing in Kruger, in your own vehicle.

It is entirely private: you travel as a couple, a family or with friends, with no group and no tour leader. You choose a South Africa self-drive in a 4x4 or a private driver. This is my recommended route, and you can change whatever you like. It suits travellers who want to watch wildlife at their own pace, enjoy walking and snorkelling, and like the idea of combining Kruger with a country few visitors know.

At a glance

  • Recommended length: 18 days (17 nights); can be cut to 14 or extended to 22
  • Style: fully arranged private trip, from 1 traveller
  • Start date: any day you choose
  • Transport: your choice of self-drive (rental 4x4) or a 4x4 with a private driver, from Johannesburg and back
  • Rough estimate, per person for 2 travellers, excluding the international flight:
Level Self-drive Private driver
Budget from about €1,890 from about €4,600
Comfort from about €2,530 from about €5,240
Premium from about €4,850 from about €7,560
  • International flight: not included; allow approx. €550–950 pp, depending on the month (cheapest in March, most expensive in July and December)
  • 4 travellers together: about €2,280 pp instead of €2,530 (Comfort, self-drive) · solo traveller: about €4,290 pp (Comfort, self-drive)
  • Best months: May to October

These prices are a first rough estimate. I will refine them once the hotels and local partners are confirmed.

Best time to travel

My recommended months are May to October. You pick your own start date, with a few practical points in mind. The malaria risk in Kruger, northern KwaZulu-Natal and eastern Eswatini is low to moderate, and higher in the rainy season from October to May. On the boat trip at sea off St Lucia you may, with some luck, see humpback whales from June to November. July and December are the most expensive months to fly to Johannesburg, March the cheapest. At Cape Vidal you snorkel at low tide, so I plan that day around the tides.

So what is the best time to visit Kruger on this route? May to October, with September a good choice if you want a chance of whales and to avoid July, the priciest month to fly.

My recommended route and why it runs this way

The route is a loop from Johannesburg, so you pick up and return your vehicle at the same airport. Eswatini comes in two parts: first the west around Mlilwane, later the east and north, with the Zululand coast in between. Kruger comes at the end, with three full days of game viewing from north to south.

You land in Johannesburg early in the morning and drive about 3 hours across the highveld to Ermelo. On day 2 you cross into Eswatini at Oshoek, lunch on the terrace of Mantenga Lodge and walk to the Mantenga waterfall and the traditional Swazi village. Mlilwane, Eswatini's oldest reserve, has no big predators, so you can explore it safely on horseback (with a reserve escort), by mountain bike or on foot, among zebras, wildebeest, kudu and hippos.

Day 4 is a long drive (approx. 4.5 to 5 hours, via Lavumisa and Jozini) to Kosi Bay, close to Mozambique, with a boat trip past the centuries-old Thonga fish traps. The next morning a 4x4 takes you to Kosi Mouth to snorkel in "the aquarium", then, permits allowing, along the coastal sand tracks via Black Rock, Lala Nek and Lake Sibaya to a bush lodge near Hluhluwe. You spend a full day driving yourself through Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, the park that saved the white rhino, then stay in St Lucia for Cape Vidal in iSimangaliso Wetland Park (UNESCO), a boat trip on the lagoon among hippos and crocodiles, and a boat launched through the surf for a trip at sea.

Back in Eswatini you join a walking safari with a park ranger in Hlane and sleep in a camp without electricity, with rhinos at the waterhole. Then the Nsangwini rock art, Eswatini's finest San paintings, with a community guide, a walk along the Phophonyane cascades and the highland reserve of Malolotja, before driving to Graskop (approx. 4 hours). Two days on the Panorama Route follow: God's Window, the Lisbon and Berlin Falls, Pilgrim's Rest, Bourke's Luck Potholes, the Three Rondavels above the Blyde River Canyon and the Leopard Trail.

In Kruger you set off at sunrise each day: central Kruger along the Letaba, Olifants and Timbavati rivers, then the open plains around Satara to the Sabie River, then the south, the park's richest area for wildlife, where with some luck you see the Big Five in one day. You finish in the highlands at Verloren Kloof near Dullstroom, in a cottage with its own kitchen, before driving back to Johannesburg airport (approx. 3 hours).

Prefer the Cape? My second South Africa route is the Cape & Garden Route trip.

Self-drive or private driver?

Self-drive is how I did this route myself. Your 4x4 is ready at Johannesburg airport and you return it there on day 18. You drive on the left and never after dark. You need the 4x4 for Kosi Mouth and the coastal sand tracks, which require a permit with a limited number of vehicles; I book it in advance, and if it is not available you take the tarred roads through Mbazwana. Your rental car has the papers to cross the border with Eswatini twice; the border posts have opening hours, which I check before departure. In Kruger and Hluhluwe-iMfolozi you drive yourself, with my favourite spots in your roadbook. Expect a few long driving days: approx. 4.5 to 5 hours on day 4 and approx. 4 hours on day 11. The rental includes zero-excess insurance, a second driver and permission to drive into Eswatini. Fuel, tolls and parking are paid locally, and the rental company takes a credit-card deposit.

With a private driver, one dedicated English-speaking driver takes you from day 1 to day 18 in a 4x4, also across the borders with Eswatini and through Kruger. He waits while you walk or snorkel. Fuel, tolls, border documents and his meals and accommodation are included, which is why this option costs considerably more. He is a driver, not a guide.

Rather not drive on the left? Choose South Africa with a private driver. If you enjoy driving and are happy to plan every stage in daylight, self-drive is the better-value choice.

What I arrange for you

17 nights at the level you choose, with breakfast and dinner where there is no alternative (Mlilwane, Kosi Bay, the lodge near Hluhluwe, Hlane, Phophonyane and the lodges near Kruger). All park and entrance fees, including the 4x4 permits in iSimangaliso and 4 days in Kruger. Three boat trips: sunset on the Kosi Bay lakes, the St Lucia estuary and the ocean trip from St Lucia beach. Always included, because that is how it works there: the escort on the Mlilwane horse ride, the boat skippers, the ranger on the Hlane walking safari and the community guide at Nsangwini.

You travel without a fixed guide: your roadbook tells you what to see where, including in Kruger. Prefer a guide? I can arrange a local guide for that activity, such as a guided open-vehicle game drive in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi or Kruger, or a dive guide at Kosi Bay, and get you the price. You also get a detailed roadbook with routes, driving times, safe parking and my favourite addresses, and one point of contact: a personal intake meeting (at your home or by video call), a WhatsApp line with me before and during the trip, a personal 24/7 number and a follow-up call after you return.

Not included: lunches, the meals at Verloren Kloof and drinks (allow approx. €20–35 pp per day), massages, tips and travel insurance.

Budget, Comfort or Premium

Budget means simple, well-reviewed guesthouses, chalets and park camps, with breakfast (and dinner where there is no alternative). Comfort means characterful lodges and guesthouses, often with a pool or a view, and tented camps and lodges on the edge of Kruger. Premium means the finest lodges on the route, with more space and views, and luxury lodges on the edge of Kruger and in Zululand. You can mix levels, for example Budget on the road and Premium near Kruger.

Adapt the route

  • Shorter (14 days): without Kosi Bay and the coastal route, straight from Mlilwane to Hluhluwe and St Lucia.
  • More Kruger: an extra night in a camp inside the park, e.g. Satara or Lower Sabie.
  • Private reserve: one or two nights in a lodge with open safari vehicles in Sabi Sand or Timbavati instead of a night outside the park.
  • Longer (up to 22 days): combine extra Kruger nights and a private reserve.

Practical tips

  • Visa (Belgian passport): no visa for tourist stays up to 90 days in South Africa. Your passport must be valid at least 30 days beyond departure, with at least 2 blank pages. An Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) exists since 12 August 2026 but is not (yet) mandatory for visa-exempt Europeans; check before departure. Minors may need extra documents. Eswatini: no visa needed for Belgians (up to 30 days); your passport is stamped at every crossing, so allow enough blank pages.
  • Health: no mandatory vaccinations, except a yellow fever certificate when arriving from (or transiting more than 12 hours through) a yellow fever country. Discuss malaria prevention with a travel clinic or wanda.be.
  • Money: South African rand (ZAR). Eswatini's lilangeni (SZL) is pegged to the rand, and the rand is accepted everywhere there. Cards work almost everywhere, except in remote camps.
  • Flights and time: approx. 13–15 hours with one connection. South Africa is 1 hour ahead in Belgian winter, with no difference in Belgian summer.
  • Language: eleven official languages, including English, Afrikaans, isiZulu and isiXhosa (siSwati and English in Eswatini); Afrikaans is quite understandable for Flemish speakers.
  • Comfort: the Hlane camp has no electricity, and water or power cuts elsewhere cannot be ruled out.

Travel advice

The Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs (update 17 July 2026) advises vigilance: crime levels are high, you should never drive after dark outside urban areas, robberies have been reported on Kruger access roads and at gates, and there is an increased risk of protests around migration issues. All driving stages are planned in daylight. Self-drivers get a written safety briefing (doors locked, nothing visible in the car, no stopping for strangers, stay on main roads) and my 24/7 number. Frequently asked questions

How much does a South Africa & Eswatini tour cost?

From about €1,890 pp in Budget with self-drive, €2,530 in Comfort and €4,850 in Premium, per person for 2 travellers, excluding the international flight. With a private driver it starts from about €4,600 pp. This is a first rough estimate that I will refine once hotels and partners are confirmed. The flight costs approx. €550–950 pp.

When is the best time to visit Kruger and Eswatini?

May to October. The malaria risk is higher in the rainy season from October to May, and humpback whales may be seen off St Lucia from June to November. July is an expensive month to fly.

Self-drive or private driver?

Self-drive is far cheaper and works well if you are comfortable driving on the left and never after dark; you need a 4x4 for Kosi Mouth. With a private driver, one dedicated English-speaking driver takes you from day 1 to day 18, including in Kruger. He is a driver, not a guide.

How many days do you need?

I recommend 18 days. In 14 days it works without Kosi Bay and the coastal route. You can extend to 22 days with extra nights in Kruger or a private reserve.

Are guided game drives included?

In Kruger and Hluhluwe-iMfolozi you drive yourself (or your driver does). The walking safari with a ranger in Hlane and the escorted horse ride in Mlilwane are included. A guided open-vehicle game drive is optional, and I am happy to book it for you.
