My recommended route across the Yucatán Peninsula, away from the crowds. If your flight lands in time you go straight on to Río Lagartos (if you land late, you first spend a night close to Cancún airport). As a honeymoon in Premium, with romantic moments on just the right day.

Travelling responsibly
We skip the big all-inclusive resorts and choose small hotels in Valladolid, Río Lagartos and Bacalar. Cenotes and excursions in Sian Ka'an and Río Lagartos are run with community cooperatives so income stays in the villages. We ask for biodegradable sunscreen and distance from flamingos and turtles, and we advise travelling outside hurricane and sargassum season. We do not build the new Tren Maya into the route where it runs through fragile jungle and cave areas, and we inform travellers honestly about the debate around it.

International flight (I'm happy to book it for you, or you book it yourself; allow approx. €570–850 pp, depending on the month); other meals and drinks (you get my restaurant recommendations); when self-driving: fuel, tolls and parking (indicative ± €125 fuel per car for the whole route, plus approx. €20 toll per trip on the Cancún–Valladolid motorway; paid locally) and the deposit on your credit card; tips for driver, skippers and guides; travel and cancellation insurance; optional activities and personal expenses; local lodging tax charged by some hotels on site.
