South Africa: Cape & Garden Route, tailored to you, free of charge
Tell me when you would like to travel and with how many. Within 48 hours I send you a personal route sketch: days, pace and hotels adapted to you. No obligation, nothing to pay.
What I will arrange for you after launch
- Pickup at the arrival airport and the transfer on your last day; the details are in the brochure.
- All hotels and guesthouses, booked in advance at the level you choose: Budget, Comfort or Premium.
- Transport on the ground: a rental car waiting for you (self-drive) or a private driver and private transfers. Domestic flights and trains where that makes sense.
- The activities and entrance fees on the route. Prefer a guide? I can add a local guide to any activity.
- Breakfast, and the meals at remote places with no alternative (such as a safari lodge, desert camp or yurt camp). For the other meals I give you my restaurant recommendations, but you choose completely freely where you eat.
- A personal intake, at your home or by video call.
- A WhatsApp line, before and during your trip, and my personal number, always at hand.
- A call-back after your trip.
- Your international flight from Brussels: after launch I'm happy to book it for you, or you book it yourself. Prices on the site exclude the flight.
When to travel
Your dates are completely free: there are no fixed departure dates, you leave on the day that suits you. My recommended route takes 16 days. Shorter or longer is possible too; I adapt the route.
This is advice, not a rule. If you want to travel in another month, I tell you honestly what to expect (rain, heat, crowds) and adapt the route.
Price by level and transport
You choose the level of your hotels and how you get around. Same route, same care; only the hotels and the transport differ.
Estimated prices per person, based on 2 travellers, excl. international flight. The price per person is calculated per party size (rooms and transport shared). E.g. Comfort, self-drive: solo € 6,620, two € 3,770, three € 3,110, four € 3,520 pp. Pick the number of travellers in the price box.
If you are interested, I am happy to send you the hotel guide with all the addresses.
More about self-drive and the private driver on this route
Self-drive
South Africa is a pleasant country to drive yourself: good tarred roads and clear signposting. You drive on the left and never after dark. On day 3 your rental car is delivered to your hotel in Cape Town; you return it at Gqeberha airport on day 16. A normal car or compact SUV is fine; the Swartberg Pass is gravel but easy in dry weather (otherwise you take Meiringspoort). Only the optional Baviaanskloof needs a 4x4. The longest driving days take approx. 2.5 to 3 hours (days 6, 8 and 13). Fuel, tolls and parking are paid locally.
Private driver
Rather not drive on the left? Then one dedicated English- and Afrikaans-speaking private driver takes you from day 3 to day 16 in a comfortable vehicle. He waits while you walk or visit; fuel, tolls and his meals and accommodation are included. He is a driver, not a guide. Game drives in the reserves are with the lodges' rangers.
Flight & price
After launch I'm happy to book your flight for you, or you book it yourself. The prices on this page exclude the international flight.
Flight to Cape Town, returning from Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) via Johannesburg or Cape Town, not included: allow about € 700–1,050 p.p. depending on the month (cheapest in March, most expensive in July and December). I am happy to book the flight for you, or you book it yourself.
Estimated price per person based on 2 travellers, excl. international flight; higher in high season, lower in low season. Not an offer: nothing is being sold yet.
Travelling responsibly
You stay in small, locally owned guesthouses and lodges and travel in one vehicle for your own party, without a domestic flight. Amakhala is a reserve where farming families returned their land to nature; the SANParks fees go to conservation. Monkeyland takes in primates rescued from captivity. If you choose a guide, I arrange someone from the area, paid per activity.
