Mexico – Yucatán: cenotes and Maya culture

The route crosses the Yucatán Peninsula, away from the crowds. You take a sunrise boat among the flamingos of Río Lagartos and see the pink water of Las Coloradas. You climb Ek Balam and swim in X'Canché cenote. Chichén Itzá you visit at opening time, before the crowds.

In colonial Valladolid you join a cooking class at a Maya family's home. Then Tulum above the Caribbean Sea and floating through the canals of Sian Ka'an. The romantic highlights: dinner in a cenote, twenty metres underground, and a catamaran across the seven-coloured Bacalar lagoon at sunset.

Costa Rica: volcanoes, rainforest and ocean

You look into the steaming crater of Poás volcano, with a coffee tasting at a historic estate. By boat you explore the jungle canals of Tortuguero, where sea turtles nest from July to October. At Arenal volcano an evening in natural hot springs awaits.

Then hanging bridges above the rainforest, the Monteverde cloud forest by day and by night, and monkeys, sloths and white beaches in Manuel Antonio. You finish with three relaxing days on the Pacific coast near Uvita. There you head into the Marino Ballena marine park with a naturalist guide, with luck among whales.

The season

From December to March both are at their best, so you can choose freely. In November Mexico fits better. In April, July and August Costa Rica fits better. From June to November it's hurricane season in the Caribbean, with the highest chance of storms in late summer and early autumn. Costa Rica gets more rain in many places then, but July and August often bring a drier spell.

The budget

Mexico – Yucatán is the least expensive of our honeymoons: from €6,460 for the two of you. Costa Rica starts higher, from €8,340 for the two of you, with more time in nature and on the Pacific coast. If you'd rather not drive, ask for a driver in your proposal.

Which one is for you?

  • Mexico if you love history, swimming in clear cenotes and colourful towns, and want the lowest price.
  • Costa Rica if you want nature and wildlife, enjoy walking and love watching the sun sink into the ocean.
